The author is in our library almost every week. I have several of her books on our shelves. She asked me to read this one and write a review. I really enjoyed this book. It is a small book but it is not light. Read it with an open and clear mind and it will do what she means it to do - uplift you - encourage you - make you smile!

She wrote this is a book for all ages. I am reading it in my 50's and have gotten several nuggets of wisdom that I will share.

"We take what we CAN do, add it to what we WANT to do and go from there."

"Positive thoughts bring positive results." She also says you have to "practice positive". You have to make it a habit.

One of my favorite chapters, "Don't Let Age Stop You". She decided to take a trip to Italy to visit an old friend. Almost all the responses were negative. "You're foolish to make a trip at your age." "You're going alone! That's ridiculous." So at the age of 80, she made her trip to Italy for four weeks and had a wonderful time. The year she traveled, her email was hacked. Imagine my horror when I received an email telling me that she was stranded in England - send money. Thank goodness it wasn't real. Snopes said it was a hoax.

I had not thought about this but she has a chapter on "Developing Friendships". Have more than one best friend. Make new ones when you can. She said that having one BFF is wonderful until that friend is gone. Then what do you do? Make new friends now while you are healthy and mobile.

I also appreciated her advice on knowing the difference between acquaintances and real friends. This was in her chapter, "The upside of being alone." When we are young we seek out "crowds" so we won't be alone. These are not people who will care about you if you get sick or need to really talk. She says spend your "crowd time" with people you care about.

Make sure you read the chapter, "Making Final Plans". This had some excellent advice. Things that I have never thought about.

Avoid negative people. They will rub off on you and then you become one of them. This is one of several really great statements: "Our lives become the sum of our thoughts."

In this same chapter she relates a conversation:
Yesterday someone told me, "I'm not gonna make it." I asked "You're not gonna make What? Tell me what you are trying to Do?" My question stopped him cold; he could not tell me the goal of his idea of 'making it'.

How can we succeed at anything if we don't understand what we are trying to do? You can't.

This a very uplifting book to me. If you need some encouragement or know someone who does, this is a great gift.
